NotesAmoreux, a well-known physician from Montpellier, was a regular competitor in academic contests throughout France. Parallel to his participation in the prize contest on travels at Lyon, he also took part in - and won as the sole competitor - a contest in Lyon on the topic of venomous animals.

His dissertation on travel and its educational benefits is one of the most thorough pieces submitted to the contest - it covers even fields that are only loosely related to the question, such as the role of gambling in education. However, this was considered a negative feature in the eyes of the jury: Amoreux's exhaustiveness is considered exhausting for the reader. The jury's review likens him to a well-meaning bourgeois, with whom you are happy to have a dinner, but would prefer not to meet again. Thus, this piece isn't recommended for the prize or for distinction. In the summary at the beginning of the printed version of the contest (see elsewhere in this database), two ideas from Amoreux's essay are repeated - namely that all social classes should travel, and that the government should send specialists abroad to spy on foreign technologies.

This essay is discussed by Gilles Bertrand in ch.1. ('Les raisons du voyage') of his 'Le Grand Tour revisité' (Ecole Française de Rome, 2009). Bertrand worked on the other surviving copy of the text, held in the library of Montpellier.

Another copy survives, with the name of the author, in Bibliothèque Municipale de Montpellier, Ms 90, ff. 82-118
