Biographical NotesHistorian and political polemicist. Catharine Macaulay is considered the first English woman historian. She is mainly known for her eight-volume 'History of England', which proposed radical views. This work departed from both Tory and Whig readings of history and is thought to have influenced the course of the American Revolution. Macaulay also expressed views on education, arguing against gendered education systems, and wrote vehemently against slavery and capital punishment.
