| Biographical Notes | Travel writer. Born in Rotterdam, to an English merchant father. Travelled very widely in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Spain, Portugal, and France. Best known for his travel works including 'Travels through Portugal and Spain in 1772 and 1773' (1775) and 'A Tour in Ireland in 1775' (1776). Member of the Royal Society from 1774, withdrew in 1794. His obituary notice in the 'Gentleman's Magazine' (April 1821) observes that he ‘unfortunately entered into a speculation of making paper from straw, by which he ruined an ample hereditary fortune’.
