| Biographical Notes | Clergyman, prominent novelist, and travel writer. Most famous for the humorous novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman', which appeared in 9 volumes across the years 1759–67. When Sterne later also published collected volumes of sermons he did so under the name of Yorick, a village parson character in his earlier novel, as 'The Sermons of Mr Yorick'. He also used the name Yorick for his protagonist in his later 'Sentimental Journey'. See ODNB. |
